ActivTrak Productivity Lab: AI Users Have Workdays Up to 90 Minutes Longer Than Non-Users
PR Newswire
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 29, 2026
New analysis of 9,140 workers reveals the hidden friction of AI adoption — and why integrating AI into workflows matters more than usage alone.
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The ActivTrak Productivity Lab today released new research revealing patterns in how artificial intelligence changes work. The analysis found that AI users have workdays up to 90 minutes longer than non-users, while heavy users switch between applications more frequently and have shorter periods of uninterrupted focus.
Unlike employee surveys or self-reported AI adoption, the analysis draws on actual digital work patterns from 9,140 knowledge workers across 467 enterprises collected between April 1 and September 25, 2026.
Using ActivTrak’s proprietary behavioral work data, researchers examined how AI usage relates to workday length, application switching, focus and workflow efficiency — revealing differences between adopting AI tools and integrating them effectively into daily work.
Key findings include:
- AI users have longer workdays. Workday spans range from 8.4 to 9.1 hours, compared with 7.6 hours for non-users — a difference of up to 90 minutes per day.
- Heavy AI users put in more time on the “third shift.” They spend nearly the same share of their workday after-hours as non-users (32.3% versus 31.9%), but their longer workdays add 18 minutes daily.
- Heavy AI usage is associated with more application switching. At 1.1 switches per hour, heavy users switch applications 15.2% more frequently than non-users, who average 0.95 switches per hour.
- Heavy AI users have shorter focus sessions than light users. Uninterrupted focus sessions average 37.8 minutes for heavy AI users, compared with 48.2 minutes for light users — a difference of 22%.
- Heavy AI users spend a smaller share of their workday in meetings. Formal meetings account for 3% of their work time, compared with 5% for non-users.
The analysis also identified significant differences in application switching based on how employees access AI tools and their job roles:
- Embedded AI tools are associated with less application switching. Employees using AI embedded within their primary work applications average just 0.6 app switches per hour, compared with 1.7 to 4.2 switches for those using browser-based tools.
- Browser-based AI introduces a potential “swivel-chair tax.” Employees using browser-based AI switch applications more than four times as often as non-AI users (4.2 versus 0.95 per hour), potentially adding friction as they move between tools to complete their work.
Differences by job role include:
- Software engineers, who are more likely to use embedded AI tools, average 0.6 application switches per hour and spend 78.5% of their active time in core coding applications.
- Operations managers, who are more likely to rely on browser-based AI tools, spend 75.5% of their active time in core applications and average 1.1 application switches per hour, rising to 4.1 during periods of heavy coordination.
These findings suggest that integrating AI directly into existing applications may help reduce context switching while standalone tools may introduce additional steps into workflows.
“AI may help employees complete tasks faster, but our research shows it contributes to longer workdays, more application switching and shorter focus sessions,” said Gabriela Mauch, Chief Customer Officer and Head of the ActivTrak Productivity Lab. “For leaders, the goal can’t simply be AI usage; they need to treat AI usage as a means to measurable gains in productivity, efficiency and business performance.”
Research Methodology and Definitions
Users
- Heavy AI Users: Employees who use AI heavily (>45 minutes and 5+ sessions per day).
- Light AI Users: Employees who use AI sparingly for quick tasks (<10 minutes total per day).
- Regular AI Users: Employees who use AI for 10 to 45 minutes per day.
- Non-Users: Employees who do not use generative AI tools.
After Hours
- On weekdays: All productive screen time logged outside of the user’s scheduled start and end times.
- On weekends: Any time an employee logs less than two hours of productive screen time. More than two hours may indicate a regular weekend work schedule rather than incidental after-hours work.
